About Us

Who we are and what we do

  • Everyone involved in the running of Liss Archaeology is an unpaid volunteer.

  • We have no full-time staff; we all take care of the organisation of our group in our spare time - although for some of the committee members it can be a very time-consuming hobby.

  • Several of our members have gone on to achieve first or postgraduate degrees in archaeology disciplines and there is a broad range of relevant skills across our volunteers.

  • Many members have become experts in relevant techniques such as:

    • site and trench supervision,

    • surveying,

    • geophysics techniques (trained by Historic England),

    • geographical information system (GIS) software,

    • finds identification and processing (whether pottery, glass, metals or bone).

  • Our archaeology projects are always carried out under the professional supervision of our Archaeological Director, Juliet Smith, who is a professionally qualified and experienced archaeologist.

  • We use many state-of-the-art techniques, including magnetometry, resistivity, GNSS surveying, photogrammetry and thermal imaging.

  • We usually undertake three or four major excavations each year, supplemented by preparatory desktop research, fieldwalking, geophysics scans and test pit excavations of potential sites.

  • Despite the name of our group, we are the community archaeology group for East Hampshire and our projects take place throughout the area. We are greatly helped by David Hopkins the County Archaeologist for Hampshire, and his team in Winchester.
